Happy New Year 2024
For the seventh year running, our special look at how various channels covered the crossover from 2023 into 2024. With apologies for few gaps and glitches due to very poor weather conditions in the local area for New Year's Eve this year affecting the satellite reception.
The pattern was similar to how it had been in recent years. The BBC channels all put out something, before immediately turning off all festive presentation after midnight, and with the Scottish nation doing its own thing as usual. ITV made mentions across some of their channels but not others, while Channel 4 made an effort to include something across most channels in their family. And once again Channel 5 mostly sat out the party.
The Discovery-owned channels continued their practice of never deviating from their pre-recorded advert continuity links for random shows or Discovery+. And finally the UKTV family of channels varied from some like Drama, who once again pretended New Year didn't exist, to others like Dave who built up to the party mood in links throughout the evening.
Dave (9pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
UKTV were mixed in their continuity mentions of the New Year for the 2023/2024 crossover. Drama once again pretended the event didn't exist, whereas most of the other channels made occasional references. Dave was back as the most common to reference the occasion once again, after their dropout last year. Building up in the 9pm junction here on New Year's Eve.
Dave (10pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
Dave (11pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
Dave (ECP - 11.59pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
With a junction straddling midnight this time round, Dave were able to play out the end credit promotion with a 'pre' new year message over the previous programme just before midnight and the ident with a 'post' message just after midnight. First the ECP, aired just before midnight on December 31st.
Dave (12am - NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
Dave (12.40am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
W (10.40pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
After being the channel with the most announcements at the end of 2022, for the end of 2023 W were back to making few references to the occasion. With a schedule filled mostly of comedy repeats and fairly generic announcements to match. However the 10.40 junction did get a brief reference to the year change included in the announcement

Yesterday (ECP - 11.59pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024

E4 (1.30am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
E4 Extra (9pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
Over the course of 2023, E4 Extra had finally gained more tailored continuity announcements to bring it more in line with the other channels in the Channel 4 family, as opposed to the generic links that had previously been used as part of the carryover from the old Box Music setup. This meant that for the New Year, they were also able to put out tailored New Year continuity for the first time. The 9pm junction on the channel.
E4 Extra (11.15pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
E4 Extra (12.15am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
Film4 (9pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024

Film4 (2.05am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
More4 (12.20am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
More4 seemed a little left out of the New Year party compared to previous years, with few mentions of the occasion in the build up to midnight. However Channel 4 do like to include every one of their channels to some degree, and true to form a message was included with their first junction after midnight on January 1st.
S4C (10.30pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
S4C (12.05am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
S4C (12.05am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
Channel 5 (8pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
Things were on their usual pattern at Channel 5 towers too. An evening of filler music party programming, and very little acknowledgement of the occasion on the announcements on the main channel (with even less on their offshoot channels). There was one mention of the occasion allowed in the 8pm junction on New Year's Eve though.
ITV1 (11.40pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
Network ITV1 have traditionally filled New Year's Eve with a movie before cutting to ITV News shortly before midnight, and the end of 2023 was to be no exception. With no acknowledgement of the occasion into the Bond movie immediately prior to the news, it was left to last junction of the year at 11.40pm to really get into the New Year spirit.
ITV1 (12.10am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
STV (10pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
STV (11.15pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
In their last junction of 2023 at 11.15pm, and another which didn't exist in England, STV continued their build up to midnight with their own programme spanning midnight and incorporating the Scottish celebrations. From just after midnight, the channel largely rejoined the same programming as network ITV1.

BBC Scotland (12.30am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
Poor weather conditions in my local area limited the amount of junctions captured for the BBC Scotland channel for the 2023/2024 buildup. However not to be left out completely, here is the final junction from the channel for the night aired at 12.30am immediately after the conclusion of the Hogmanay programme that as usual was simulcast on both the BBC Scotland channel and BBC One Scotland.

BBC Two NI (11.30pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Two Northern Ireland's final junction of 2023 wished viewers a Happy New Year from everyone at BBC Northern Ireland. Unfortunately poor weather conditions hammering the satellite reception mean we're unable to bring the junction from Wales too, however there Mark James included a name check and wished everyone a Happy New Year from Central Square, Cardiff.
BBC Two (1.30am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Three (7pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Three (11.45pm NYE) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Three (12.15am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Three (12.45am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
BBC Four (12.20am NYD) - New Year 2023/2024
With BBC Four's ever decreasing budget and changed remit as a 'repeats' channel, the continuity links for the new year were somewhat more subdued too compared to BBC Three. The evening saw a mix of both generic announcements, and some tailored to the different programming for New Year's Eve/Day but scripted in such a way that they could be used for multiple showings of the same show. The first junction for 2024 however was into a film which was not being repeated, allowing for a more bespoke message to be put out in that junction welcoming viewers to the new year.
